SDG-HUB

AI-Driven Semantic Search and Visualization to Support the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030

SDG-HUB will build a knowledge repository to address the socio-ecological challenges towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda 2030 and the climate mitigation goals of the Paris Agreement in particular. The project is focused on providing

  1. concrete insights into citizen and stakeholder perceptions, and into problems and value systems that determine actions of social target groups as vital input for transdisciplinary dialogues with specific societal target groups, and
  2. input for monitoring and evaluation of Agenda 2030 & Paris Agreement progress.

Climate change and sustainable development communication processes will be analysed using radical AI technologies like entity-centric language models that perform joint Word Sense Disambiguation and relation extraction and explainable bias detection. The AI methodology will encompass all the steps of the process from data collection to the development and training of associated neural models, and their outputs. Due to its interdisciplinarity, the project aims to contribute with concrete measurable improvements in achieving the climate and sustainability goals in Austria.

Main SDG-HUB components along the science communication data value chain, including content production, automated classification and cross-linking, and SDG progress tracking

Use Case 1: Data-Driven Sustainability Communication

We will identify similar and redundant content in communication, press and media as well as related publications to this topic (via Site Search or when authoring a paper). By doing so, the used datasets will be either Metadata Features (like resolution) or just similarity of the textual description of the topic. The goal is to increase Adoption / Reuse / Impact of Existing Resources (Findability, Accessibility, Sharability, etc.) in both Datasets and Publications.

Use Case 2: Agenda 2030: Fostering the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals

We will integrate into the initiatives run by the CCCA (2nd Austrian Assessment Report – AAR 2024 and climate change mitigation pathways) as well as the project UniNEtZ, resp. UniNEtZ II (transdisciplinary dialogue with selected social groups on concrete measures from the options report and monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of options).
